MR5E Analysis on the Laying on of Hands

The main characters of the Scripture passage (Acts 8:4-22) are Philip, Simon, Peter, and John. Philip went preaching in Samaria. He preached the Gospel to them and many believed him. However, there was a Magician named Simon who people claimed he did great things with the power of God. When Philip preached to him, he started believing in God. When the Apostles heard of Philip's success in Samaria, Peter and John came down and prayed for the people that they could receive the Spirit. Simon saw this and offered money to receive the Spirit. Peter responds, "May your money perish with you, because you thought that you could buy the gifts of God wiith money" (Acts 8:20).

This passage shows the implementation of Confirmation. The people had been baptized with water, Peter and John called down the Spirit upon them to help them. 

Because Philip is a deacon, and he could not help the people, and he called Peter and John down, it signifies that Peter and John probably have experienced the Spirit to a higher and deeper degree. At this point, Peter and John are exercising the priesthood. 

Peter responds harshly when Simon offers  to buy the gifts of God. This shows that the Church was very receptive of the gifts that God offered them through Jesus.

Today, the 'laying on of hands' is still known as the laying on of hands. The Church performs the same actions today as they did in the first years of the Church.

The sacraments represent the best way to get God's grace. Its good to be open to God's grace and seek it, but to seek it greedily is bad.

Vicar = someone authorized to act in the name of another

The Apostles appointed bishops, who in turn appoint other bishops which means that the teaching authority of the Church comes from Jesus

"When Christ instituted the Twelve, 'he constituted [them] in the form of a college or permanent assembly, an the head of which he placed Peter, chosen from among them.' Just as 'by the Lord's institution, St. Peter and the test of the Apostles constitute a single apostolic college, so in like fashion othe Roman Pontiff, Peter's susccessor, and the bishops, the successors of the apostles, are related with and united to one another.'" (CCC 880)

The Mystical Body of Christ much represents the life of the Individual person. The Mystical Body of Christ has a Spiritual aspect. The individual has a prayer life and works to attain friendship with God through that. The mystical Body of Christ also has a Physical aspect. The Individual obviously has a Physical aspect as he is a Physical being. As the Church has a head, so we have a Physical head, as we have parts, we make up the parts of the Church. As the Church is being passed on, so we pass on our properties to the next generation. So, in reality, its no mystery that we make up the Mystical Body of Christ. We all have many traits that link us to it.

MR5 5.C banquet example analysis- Hohman

Through the Church we receive salvation. Jesus gives the a Church the power to save because he gave the power to forgive sin to the Apostles. All we must do is accept Jesus as our savior and he will forgive our sins. It's like the banquet example because all we need to do is come through the door to receive the feast. All we need to do is accept Christ to receive redemption.

This is analysis because it first lists the major parts of the chapter and then comes to conclusions about the information given. The outline writes down the main ideas of the sections. I follow that up with the big ideas of individual subsections. The conclusive paragraph restates anf gives reasons and shows understanding of the material.

The Church is Necessary for Salvation

The Church is the only way to salvation. That in itself has been told to us by Jesus and his countless saints and holy people. Jesus showed the way to salvation through himself. So that means that all born after 33 AD are condemned to Hell, right? Wrong. Jesus Christ founded the Church, his bride, to carry on his work in the world. As the Church is a Pilgrim Church, on a journey and in a constant struggle for salvation, it also carries on Jesus' work of salvation. But this is probably a pretty phony salvation, right? Wrong, since Jesus founded the Church, his grace and infallibility is imparted to the Church so they can speak infallibly about religious topics and doctrine. The Church/Kindom

God created man to partake in his divine life.

MR 5.A Analysis on the Pentecost

This Analysis was written after reading our textbook and an article. It is the product of conversation and critical thinking between the members of our group. Nicolas Wilson, Tristan Dupuis, and Ethan Perez. We did not merely repeat what we read. The purpose of this analysis is to show our understanding. In doing so, hopefully we can better others' understanding.



There are two types of graces, sanctifying and actual. Sanctifying grace stays within your soul and makes it holy. Sanctifying grace is also a way to get into heaven, to be in communion with God, or have redemption. The Holy Spirit, at Pentecost, gave the disciples this grace, to go and spread the Word of God in different tongues. Actual grace is a supernatural grace that pushes people forward. It does not live in the soul, but is rather in a way external. The Holy Spirit also gave the disciples Actual grace, and propelled them forward, however it did not have as much influence on them as Sanctifying grace. It was influencing them as they were doing their good works. Eternal life is also obtained by the acceptance of Actual grace. Actual grace, as well as Sanctifying grace are necessary for redemption. The Apostles spread this grace through Pentecost, so that others whom they evangelized to would be able to receive the Holy Spirit in many ways such as Baptism. The next section explains that venial sins do not destroy supernatural life and do not lessen it, however mortal sins destroy it ouright. However, mortal sin can be forgiven through redemption, which can be achieved through graces discussed in section 1, spread by the Apostles through the Holy Spirit.

In John 3:5 Jesus tells us that baptism is undoubtedly necessary for the forgiveness of sins. Because of this the early church fathers wrote into the Nicene Creed that, " We believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sins."

MR 4.E Analysis on the Resurrection.

This Idea Sketch analyzes the Resurrection. Two philosophers reasoned out the Resurrection. Rudolf Bultmann said that if the bones of Jesus were found, Christianity would not change. St. Paul said that if the Resurrection is untrue, than man is living a lie. Bultmann is wrong because it has been shown that if the Resurrection was wrong, than why would the disciples go to horrible deathes. Because of this, we know that the disciples would not have passed on untrue teachings.

This video justifies Analysis because I delve in to the ideas about Purgatory and why they exist. I also give my own analogies about Purgatory. I used Mr. Cole's analogy for Purgatory. His outline I also used to outline in the video.

This video is Analysis because it goes into meanings of major ideas of Chapter 4. I also make connections between several terms like Last Supper ---> Eucharist and more. I tried to put the same energy into this video as Mr. Cole does into his. I think that alone is worthy of Analysis.

Reflection of Transfiguration

The Transfiguration was a great miracle it showed the perfection of Jesus and life in heaven. The radiant image is the image of perfection and our life in heaven. Again, God claims Jesus as His Son. If there was any doubt that Jesus was the son of God, the messiah, the anointed one, it has all been erased at this moment. Truly God is good.

Transfiguration Reflection--Lavery

If I were at the Transfiguration, I probably would have such a hope to see heaven that I couldn't stand it. If I had seen Jesus reveal his Divinity to me, if I had heard God's voice, seen his word, and felt the Holy Spirit, I would be the happiest man in the world. I would also feel very honored that Jesus chose to reveal his divinity to me. When Jesus has his transfiguration, the awe of the moment makes Peter start saying dumb things. The combination of God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, Moses, and Elijah all in the same 30 foot radius made Peter go temporarily crazy.

A Deeper Understanding

I am learning to see the deeper implications of scripture. I have learned that you can not take things for face value that you read in scripture, especially when reading the words of John's gospel which have a much deeper spiritual than is apparent. I saw an example of this today when Mr. cole explained the export acne of the word "woman at the story of the wedding of Cana.
